The book club read for January is "Becoming Madame Secretary" by Stephanie Dray. After witnessing the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, Frances Perkins became involved in the life of the working class. She helped draft laws about working conditions, social security and the 40 hour work week. Al Smith and FDR were instrumental in her rise to become the first female cabinet member in a President's Administration. However, her personal life was somewhat tragic. The book details her life from growing up in Maine to her time in D. C. as Labor Secretary. The book club meeting will take place on January 16th at 4:00 PM in the rectory.
