The Church and its adult faithful have a mission in and to the world: to share the message of Christ to renew and to transform the social and temporal order. This dual calling to evangelization and justice is integral to the identity of the lay faithful; all are called to it in baptism. Accordingly, faith formation seeks to help each adult believer become “more willing and able to be a Christian disciple in the world.”
– Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us: A Pastoral Plan for Adult Faith Formation in the United States
In the coming weeks, the adult faith formation group will be discussing the book written by Bishop Barron, “Letter to a Suffering Church”. They will also continue with a series of lectures on the Eucharist in the Bible by Dr. Brant Pitre. In addition, they will view a movie on the life of Pope John Paul II, starring Jon Voight. Please join us for some exciting and informative weeks of faith formation.

“… in the liturgy, you are much more than simple ‘helpers of the parish priest.’ Above all, you are servers of Jesus Christ, of the eternal High Priest. Thus, you, altar servers, are called in particular to be young friends of Jesus. Be determined to go deeper and to cultivate this friendship with him. You will discover that in Jesus you have found a true friend for life.”
– St. Pope John Paul II (1920-2005 A.D.), General Audience, the 1000th of his Pontificate, August 1, 2001
Children of the parish, 4th – 12th Grades, who are commissioned altar servers by the pastor, may assist the priests at Holy Mass and other liturgies. Proper training must be completed prior to the Commissioning of Altar Servers on the Solemnity of Christ the King.

“Out of the depths I call to you, LORD; Lord, hear my cry!
May your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy.
If you, LORD, keep account of sins, Lord, who can stand?
But with you is forgiveness and so you are revered.
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and I hope for his word.
My soul looks for the Lord more than sentinels for daybreak.
More than sentinels for daybreak, let Israel hope in the LORD,
For with the LORD is mercy, with him is plenteous redemption,
And he will redeem Israel from all its sins.”
– Psalm 130

The family should live in such a way that its members learn to care and take responsibility for the young, the old, the sick, the handicapped, and the poor. There are many families who are at times incapable of providing this help. It devolves then on other persons, other families, and, in a subsidiary way, society to provide for their needs: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God and the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world.” (James 1:27)

The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as sacred song united to the words, it forms a necessary or integral part of the solemn liturgy… Therefore sacred music is to be considered the more holy in proportion as it is more closely connected with the liturgical action, whether it adds delight to prayer, fosters unity of minds, or confers greater solemnity upon the sacred rites.
We need participants of our Traditional Choir on Sundays at the 10:45 a.m. Mass. If you are interested in joining our choir, please contact the music director, Paul Light, at the rectory (718) 987-2670.

Bishops, priests and deacons distribute Holy Communion in virtue of their office as ordinary ministers of the Body and Blood of the Lord. When the size of the congregation or the incapacity of the bishop, priest, or deacon requires it, the celebrant may be assisted by other bishops, priests, or deacons.
If such ordinary ministers of Holy Communion are not present, “the priest may call upon extraordinary ministers to assist him, i.e., duly instituted acolytes or even other faithful who have been deputed for this purpose. In case of necessity, the priest may also depute suitable faithful for this single occasion.” Extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion should receive sufficient spiritual, theological, and practical preparation to fulfill their role with knowledge and reverence.
All ministers of Holy Communion should show the greatest reverence for the Most Holy Eucharist by their demeanor, their attire, and the manner in which they handle the consecrated bread or wine.

The reader is instituted to proclaim the readings from Scripture, with the exception of the gospel. He may also announce the intentions for the general intercessions and, in the absence of the psalmist, sing or read the psalm between the readings.
Those who exercise the ministry of reader, even if they have not received institution, must be truly qualified and carefully prepared in order that the faithful will develop a warm and lively love for Scripture from listening to the reading of the sacred texts.

If you are interested in becoming a lector, please, contact Mrs. Hedy Santillan via the rectory.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (Ordo Initiationes Christianae Adultorum) is designed for adults who, after hearing the mystery of Christ proclaimed, consciously and freely seek the living God and enter the way of faith and conversion as the Holy Spirit opens their hearts. By God’s help they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and at the proper time will receive the sacraments fruitfully.

“Charity is the cement which binds Communities to God and persons to one another.”
“We cannot better assure our eternal happiness than by living and dying in the service of the poor, in the arms of Providence, and with genuine renouncement of ourselves in order to follow Jesus Christ.”
“We must be full reservoirs in order to let our water spill out without becoming empty, and we must possess the spirit with which we want them to be animated, for no one can give what he does not have.”
– St. Vincent de Paul (1580-1660 A.D.)
Our services involve weekly staffing of our food pantry, providing “Care Notes” in the vestibule of the church, our yearly Baby Shower, participating in a St. Patrick’s Day party for the residents of Seaview Nursing Home, sending needy children to summer camp, transporting the residents of Seaview Nursing Home to Sunday Mass, sending greeting cards to parishioners in nursing homes, and serving Meals On Wheels. For women and men interested in joining, we meet the second Tuesday of every month in the rectory. If you are not able to join but wish to help, you can do so by making a donation in either of the poor boxes located in the vestibule of the church near the “Care Notes” and at the exit door behind the sacristy. Most importantly, we ask for your prayers to continue our charitable works.
